Holding All Things Together

Updated: Sep 14

Jesus is holding all things together.

Maybe that’s why he was able to physically walk on water. What was fluid became solid ground, held together as a firm place to stand. Surface tension increased millions of times to now hold the Son of God.

But before Jesus took His miraculous walk on water, he was in prayer; in fact, he was in prayer throughout the night. And I wonder if during his time of prayer, the psalms were on his lips, possibly even this Messianic psalm:

I waited patiently for the Lord;

he turned to me and heard my cry.

He lifted me out of the slimy pit,

out of the mud and mire;

he set my feet on a rock

and gave me a firm place to stand.

Psalm 40:1,2 NIV

From sinking to standing, from swamp to cement, God gives the one who trusts in him a solid place to stand. ¹

This is an encouragement not for you to walk on water, but rather to trust in the One who can. All things hold together in him, and he alone delivers us out of all our troubles. He is the solid rock on which we stand - the "Rock of Ages" as the hymn goes. ² Our times are in his hands, our lives held together by the eternal Lord.

He can hold water together. He can also, if he in his wisdom and plan decides to, hold our economy together. The fate of the nations is in his hands. There is nothing outside of his control. He is the One who calms the storm. He rebukes the wind and brings peace to the sea. And He can do that to the situations we find ourselves in.

So, at this time, let us trust in the Lord.

Scripture References & Notes

He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together.

Colossians 1:17 (NLT)

After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.

Matthew 14:23 (NIV)

Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake.

Matthew 14:25 (NIV)

¹ Unlike Jesus, we do not create the miraculous. There are times He does call us into it, to be a part of what He is doing, but we must understand that the miraculous happens in the context of His will, not our own desire or foresight.

² The hymn, "Rock of Ages" was written by Augustus Toplady in 1773.
