With God, all things are possible. Our current situation, no matter how grave, is not at the mercy of "fate" - it rests under the merciful care of the Sovereign God. David called the Lord, "Baal Perazim", Master of the breakthrough, ¹ when faced with his strong enemy. ² But let this, like any sign, even the miraculous signs and wonders we've seen in our own lives, set our focus not on victory, but on the Victor, Jesus Christ.
Jesus spoke of the Scripture as relating to him,
He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.” ³
Reading of David's victory through the God of the breakthrough points us to the victory we now have in Christ - he has conquered our enemies. This breakthrough, this bursting forth, this flood of triumph, is foundational and sufficient. What Christ accomplished for us on the cross and through his resurrection must be the breakthrough our souls exult in.
What enemies has God broken out against like a flood in Christ?
The world
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." — John 16:33
The flesh (our sinful nature)
For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. — Romans 8:3-4
The Devil
And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross. — Colossians 2:15
Death
I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades. — Revelation 1:18
Christ has already accomplished all of this; it is ours! We relish in the victory he has accomplished. We take heart in what he has already done. Our faith rests in the Faithful One.
