Finding Rest

Finding Rest

Find rest, O my soul, in God alone;
my hope comes from him.
– Psalm 62:5 (NIV)

As Christians, we live on the battle front, under constant conflict, and our souls often find themselves pining after rest. “Struggles within, conflicts without,” is the anthem we sometimes find ourselves singing. We battle doubt, fear, and flesh. We lift our shields against fiery darts and don our helmets from seething lies. These attacks are intended to assault, throw down, and crush. With so much contention and clashing, who wouldn’t need rest? Christians are a warring people – victorious, but at times battle weary.

So where do we start? How do we find the quietness and trust our souls thirst for? Jesus extends an invitation to cast our cares and confess our sins; we can start there by responding to him. We can start by holding nothing back and pouring out our hearts to him.

The burdens we carry can take on many forms: guilt, regret, hurt, disappointment. Maybe your backpack is stuffed with some of these – or maybe there are others. We are invited by the Savior, our strong deliverer, to find relief in him from all that feeds our anxious thoughts and invades our minds. With humility and trust, we can cast, and leave, our burdens with him. Yes, this habit of prayer is a daily practice that continues over a lifetime, but we will find that God is faithful, in his due time, to lift us up, grant us rest, and free us from that which alarms us.

He will graciously lather us in his peace and rest.

God’s presence brings refreshing, but our sins, while they no longer separate us from him, can dull our soul’s sense of his presence and even cause us to run from it. Lay these hideous weights aside, my friend, and find the sweet refreshing of confession to a faithful God who readily restores our war-torn souls! What a joy to walk in his light, in honesty, pouring out our hearts to him, no door closed, no room off-limits to him.

So, where does your hope of rest lie now? Man and money are misplaced hopes; both will fail you at some point. Look to people to be your provider or protector and you’ll eat the hollow fruit of disappointment. And riches? Wisdom warns us against setting our hearts on a growing bank account; cash has a tendency to sprout wings and vanish into the distant skyline.

The Lord invites us to shun that which provides short-lived and shallow escape and to turn to him and find deep and enduring rest, real repose, in him and from him. Let your waiting and hoping be in nothing else. “Christ alone, cornerstone”, as the song says.¹ When life’s boat is sailing stormy seas, only one is worthy of our trust, only one brings us a quieted soul. There is only one anchor, one sovereign, one hope, one Jesus. Find your rest in him. He is calling you.

Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me …
– Psalm 103:1 (ESV)

Our soul. It’s the seat of our emotions and affections. Sometimes it aligns with the truth, sometimes it doesn’t. That is why we speak to our soul. “Bless him”, “Find rest”, “Be still”. Like David, there are times when we simply need to encourage ourselves in the Lord. So, when you are down, ask your soul, “Why are you downcast?” When the depths of your inner being are disturbed, pose the question, “Why so unsettled?” Encourage your soul and tell it, “Put your hope in God!” Take the time today to speak God’s words of truth to yourself. I think you’ll find that it will lift your soul.

Have you ever stopped to think about what you are thinking about? What do you find? What do you hear?

What is one way you could get into the habit of speaking truth to your soul? What scripture could you start with?

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
— 1 John 1:7 (NIV)

Honesty may be a lonely word, but it is one important way we knock down walls and foster intimacy. Pouring out our hearts to God in lamentation and petition brings us into his light and breaks down the fears that separate and cause anxiety. And we find another benefit in this: purification — a guaranteed cleansing from the grub and grime that our daily sin brings. Doesn’t it feel good to be clean?

Do you have a difficult time being honest with God? What about with others?

Are you a “wear your emotions on the sleeve” type of person, or more of a “keep it close to the vest” type of person? Why do you think that is?

Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
— Matthew 11:29 (NLT)

Jesus is approachable. This is comforting news for someone with a shy or timid disposition where approaching someone to ask for something can evoke stress. Jesus not only promises rest, he also offers to teach us how to find that rest and live in it. He doesn’t just give us the fish, he teaches us how to fish. He wants us to know how to leave stress and anxiety behind and find true rest. Let him teach you, but first, come to him.

Have you ever asked someone to teach you how to do something? What does this require on your part?

What is required to learn from Jesus? What is one important lesson he has taught you so far in your life?

You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
— Psalm 16:11 (ESV)

Do you take time to worship the Lord in song? Nothing drops the veil of our heart and expresses its depths like a song sung to the Lord in worship. Oh, sweet times of refreshing from the presence of the Lord! The sweet psalmist of Israel, king David, knew that. And he wrote many psalms because he knew the source of his soul’s peace and who it was that sustained him. And let us not forget — the Lord is worthy of our praise!

What are some of the treasures that we find in his presence? Have you experienced times of refreshing in the presence of the Lord?

What is it about our connection to God that is life-giving? How is it that we find strength and renewal in his presence?

And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
— Mark 4:39 (ESV)

The Lord does not chide or upbraid us when we come stressed with storm tossed souls. No, rather he rebukes that which churns our emotions and pierces our thoughts and then speaks to us saying, “Peace. Be still. Find your rest in me alone.” No one else has the power to turn the noisy gale to a whisper and cover our harassed souls with a heavenly hush.

What shakes you? What stirs your emotions and thoughts? Confession is good for your soul.

Today, (and maybe tomorrow and the next day as well!), what can you cast on to the Lord in exchange for his sustaining rest? Do you want to be free of this burden?
