Cover the Earth

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.
— Psalm 19:1

A sunrise is a sunrise whether it glows above the mountains of Haiti or reflects its shine on the Thames in England. Likewise, a changed life is a miraculous wonder — in any culture. God’s glory, the display of his power and majesty, is understandable in any language. The voice of his beauteous works is heard no matter the tongue or tribe. From the highest heights to the lowest depths, God’s glory speaks to those who are willing to listen.

We were created as image-bearers of God, and at his command, we are to be fruitful, to multiply and increase, to cover this earth with his image, with his glory. Before the fall and after the flood, he commanded it, desiring his glory to cover the earth. Grow and go, go and grow, he says. You may feel that anything but the glory of God currently covers this earth. We see war, abuse, famine, thievery, extortion, scandal, and the like — all begging the question, where is his glory? The list of inglorious happenings runs on for pages. Yet mankind is still created in his image and after his likeness, even though that image and likeness have been faded by sin.

In times past, the people of Israel were to carry the message of God’s glory — his holy otherness. But now this privilege has been bestowed upon us, his people, the church. Yes, sin has corrupted the glorious visage of God in our lives, but the Gospel is restorative, and the church is the messenger of this Gospel of hope and power and regeneration. We are the unveiled ones, reflections of his goodness, radiating his glory. Because of the Gospel, we are more than reformed, we are transformed. ¹

My grandson loves to imitate me (which sometimes gets me into trouble!) Imitation is an innate behavior, isn’t it? We find a deep sense of purpose in modeling our lives after what we see and understand to be good, noble, and true. This is not accidental; God has designed us in this manner. And our longing to grow into the likeness of our Creator (as deep and hidden as that desire may be at times) has been placed there by God, by God who desires to see his glory cover the earth. We were made to make him famous. We were made to bring the knowledge of him to all the earth.

Mirrors reflect. That’s what they do. And that is what we are designed to do. We will reflect something, and the something that we reflect is largely dependent on what we reflect upon. What do we think about? Who do we think about? What do our thoughts pursue? The Gospel is both a wonder found, and a mystery uncovered. It is glorious light to the soul it shines upon. Thomas Goodwin wrote, “If anything invites the understanding of man to be searching and prying, the depths of the Gospel will do it.” ² But this is not an effort of the mind or a power of positive-thinking ploy. Christ died for us because the Father loves us; and now the Spirit transforms us. We are being “polished.” The heavens declare the glory of God; may our lives do so as well, and may the earth be covered in the glory of the Lord.

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.” …
— Genesis 1:26 (ESV)

Adam’s son Seth was born a true son to his father — in his father’s own likeness and image. He was his father’s kid. How many dads’ hearts swell with pride when a wife says to his kid, “You’re just like your father”? I know mine does, even if my wife is not exactly approving of what my kid just did! Perhaps as a parent, you understand this feeling. “Yeah, that’s my kid.” There is just something about posterity that is glorious. God designed and created it that way. Jesus encouraged it when he taught us that we are to be “perfect” as our heavenly Father is perfect. We were created to be like our Dad in heaven. We love our enemies. We are light. We are cities set on a hill. That’s just who we are.

Do children have to try to be like their parents, or is it just who they are? What is the role of the Holy Spirit, the Helper, in our lives reflecting our Father?

What are a few of the characteristics of God your Father that you desire to model? In what ways are you like your heavenly Father?

For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.
— Habakkuk 2:14 (ESV)

The Lord made the earth and created mankind on it that his glory might radiate from his creation. How marvelous are his works, and we are the work of his hands. You are the work of his hands. Do you believe that? We were made to be reflectors of our Maker, mirrors of his majesty. A sense of wonder and marvel over his creation may at times be distant from us, hidden from our sight, but it is still there. How does the water cover the sea? Completely (it is the sea) and obediently (come this far and no farther ³). It is God’s desire that his glory cover this earth through us, his people; through you. Go and grow. He’s called you to it.

In what ways do we, as God’s people, show forth his glory? What are the challenges we may face in reflecting his glory and goodness to others?

In what ways do you personally shine forth his glory and goodness? What can hamper God being glorified through you?

As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth and increase upon it.
— Genesis 9:7 (NIV)

It strikes me that God commands man in his fallen nature to increase upon the earth. Why? Why would God want the surface of the earth populated with fallen people? Genesis 9:6 may help us to understand God’s perspective. In this scripture, God forbids murder because “in the image of God has God made mankind.” Even though our visage has been marred by sin, we still bear his image. We are faded glory, but glory nonetheless. Now we, as believers, are destined to be conformed into the image of Jesus, who reflects our heavenly Father perfectly. And it follows that our lives are to impact the lives of others — family, neighbors, co-workers, all of those who were created in his image and have yet to know him. May our lives rise to be a sweet fragrance of life to them.

Does knowing that all people have been created in God’s image change your view of people? How?

Why do you think God commanded imperfect, sinful people to increase on the earth? In what ways do people in general reflect their Creator?

And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
— 2 Corinthians 3:18 (ESV)

I once dreamt that I was in a cellar where an evil presence was emanating from an object. In my dream, I grabbed the object to throw it out of the cellar. As I looked down to see what I was about to jettison, I saw that it was a mirror. I believe the Lord was trying to tell me something by giving me this dream. A constant focus on self is an evil that will deter our growth in the Lord. We don’t become reflectors of his glory by trying to fix ourselves. A large dose of self-monitoring is of no use when it comes to being transformed into his image. We become glory reflectors by looking at him, not ourselves. “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit.” ⁴ Our freedom comes from the Holy Spirit. Aren’t you glad he is your source of constant help?

What is one way we can gaze upon the Lord’s beauty? What can hinder our ability to reflect his image to a dying world?

Do you tend to focus on yourself, to get stuck in the rut of self-evaluation? Can you think of a scripture that may be of help to you when this cycle happens?

For the LORD has redeemed Jacob,
And He shows His glory in Israel.
— Isaiah 44:23 (AMPC)

When God saves, God gets glory. Just look at Louis Zamperini. You may have read about his life in the book, “Unbroken” or seen the movies about him. His life went from troubled child to Olympic distance runner to World War II POW to a broken, post-war mess. But that’s not where his story ends; that’s not where God left him. Making good on a promise to serve God that Louis had made to the Lord while adrift on the Pacific, he received Christ at a Billy Graham crusade. That day the Lord miraculously rescued him from intense PTSD nightmares and all-consuming alcoholism, and restored his marriage as well. God saves broken lives. He did mine. I’ve come to know him as the faithful Father of a wandering prodigal. What is your story? It doesn’t have to be dramatic to give him glory, it just needs to reflect him.

Where have you seen the redemptive power of God in your life? How about in the life of someone you know?

Is there someone you know who could use a taste of God’s goodness? How could you reflect his glory into that person’s life?
